The Sacred Island

Raiatea, meaning "faraway heaven" and "sky with soft light" is the most sacred and second largest island in the South Pacific. It has been called the “sacred island”; and considered the cultural heart and birthplace of Tahiti Polynesia. The green-carpeted mountains covering the interior include the celebrated Mt. Temehani, a sort of Polynesian Mt. Olympus.  The town of Uturoa is a waterfront city that reminds one of Papeete in its formative years. The neighboring island of Tahaa shares the lagoon and is only accessible by boat. The tranquil setting features small motus and deep bays for fishing.
