KAUAI Bars and Nightlife

The Point - Sheraton Poipu

Experience the essence of the good life at this laid-back yet elegant watering hole in the Sheraton. Sip Mai Tais or fine wine while listening to live music and breathing in the scent of orchids and sea salt. Watch the sun set from the patio or, if the temperature dips below 75 degrees (a rare occurrence), through the full-length bay windows. Dine on Asian-influenced hors d' oeuvres. Don't miss the Torch Lighting Ceremony held at dusk every night.

Tidepools - Hyatt Poipu

The Hyatt's most popular restaurant is also a great place to have a drink and soak up the atmosphere. The restaurant is surrounded by a free-form pool, which makes for a pleasant, serene atmosphere. It serves Hawaiian-inspired cuisine which focuses heavily on steak and seafood. The menu changes regularly, but you can always count on a few fresh and delicious seafood catches. The extensive wine list offers vintages from all over the world. The lounge opens a half-hour earlier than the restaurant and closes whenever patrons choose to go home.

Brenneckes Poipu

Rebuilt after a hurricane all but destroyed its original structure, this breezy Poipu Beach hot spot offers broiler favorites in an informal environment. Outdoor seating provides optimal views, and the clientele is mixed. The lunch menu includes standard favorites such as hamburgers and pupus. A deli counter is open downstairs, serving salads, sandwiches and an alternating daily special. Dinner is on the pricey side and typically includes steaks and seafood.

Dukes Canoe Club - Lihue

Experience a little piece of "Old Hawai'i." This Lihue restaurant is located inside the Kauai Marriott Resort and offers the best of Pacific Rim cuisine, along with outstanding ambiance and beautiful views. The restaurant is comprised of two floors and has an enchantingly tropical ambiance, complete with a small indoor waterfall. A canopy of lush foliage adds to the effect, and even the indoor dining area gives the impression of being open air. Take your time having a drink in the casual bar area or looking over the menu. The house specialty is fresh local fish, prepared any way you like.

Iti Winebar - Hanalei

Located in the heart of Hanalei adjacent to the ever popular Tahiti Nui, this small bar is a charming and inviting spot to spend the evening with food, friends and drink. The stylish setting is unique with casual tropical flair, and the atmosphere is more genuine than anyone could dream up in design school. It’s more of a spot where locals gather, since it is much of a secret to anyone other than those who live in Hanalei. However, clued-in tourists have been known to drop in on a secret insider tip, while a lucky few stumble upon it in search of fun and frivolity in charming Hanalei. -Lottie Tagupa

Seaview Terrace - Poipu

The Seaview Terrace located in Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa offers an incredible view of the Bay in front of the hotel as well as a fabulous view of the resort itself. In this hip lounge one can sip on tropical drinks and enjoy the local Hawaiian entertainment. The morning menu consists of freshly made pastries, cakes, juice and coffee. The lounge also offers a splendid variety of cocktails and local appetizers known as 'pupu'. The evenings are a lovely time to visit the Seaview Terrace as you can peacefully watch the beautiful Hawaiian sunset, which is followed by the traditional torch lighting ceremony.

The Shack - Kapaa

What better combination than sports and good food? At the Shack Sports Bar you can play video games, pinball and pool or watch NFL games and live telecasts of other sports, on Saturdays and Sundays. If you are hungry, choose from local dishes, salads, sandwiches, burgers, steak etc. And you cannot afford to miss the famous Shack cheeseburger at any cost!

Stevensons Library - Poipu

Take a seat at the 27-foot, hand crafted koa wood bar or select a table in the cozy booked lined room. Reminiscent of a Victorian-era gentlemen's club, Stevenson's Library boasts an extensive selection of Cognac and Port and plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a game of pool, backgammon or chess or just relax to the soothing sounds of the live Jazz. Stevenson's also offers a full menu of freshly prepared Sushi, served Friday through Monday.

Princeville Bar & Restaurant

Situated on the stunning Princeville Golf Course on the verdant North Shore of Kaua'i, this place offers golfers and guests of the Princeville Resort a casual place to dine in the morning or afternoon. Cocktail breaks at the bar are also a favorite. Of course, Princeville equals pricey, so don't expect to find any cheap eats here, but this place probably does offer the least expensive meals on the resort. Sandwiches, salads, pupus and cocktails are served. Sushi is offered on Monday nights.

Tahiti Nui, North Shore

“The Nui” as it’s known is the classic North Shore bar, bedecked in a Polynesian dive theme and decor that speaks to its long history in Hanalei. Current owner Christian Marston keeps a picture of his mom and founder of Tahiti Nui, Louise, on the wall. If you’re out on the North Shore, eventually everybody ends up at the Nui. You know the party has started there when people have begun spilling out on to the deck and try to stay within the “No Alcohol Past This Point” line. It’s a fun, if slightly raucous, place usually with a band nightly and people dancing.

Tomkats, Koloa

Located smack-dab in the center of Old Koloa Town, this cheery restaurant serves American comfort food. Steaks, burgers and ribs are served, as well as pasta and vegetarian specialties for non-meat eaters. Desserts are fresh baked, and the fish is freshly caught. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Families are more than welcome in the dining area; there is even a children's menu. The full bar offers sports and suds to thirsty locals and guests.

Trees Lounge - Kapaa

On an island of 67,000 people there really can only be one hot spot and right now, Trees is the best place to find Kauai nightlife. A tad hodgepodge, it’s hard to tell whether they were going for a tent-like ambiance or something a bit more upscale. Regardless, by the end of most nights, it’s standing room only at Trees; but to be fair, the venue just isn’t that large. Trees likely owes  its success to its casual-but-hip decor, decent wine list, and simple, good food (a fusion of Jamaican, New Orleans, and Hawaiian influence). Live music every night along with casting parties and belly dancers help keep this Eastside bar busy.

Waimea Brewing Company - Waimea

Perched on the Western shore of Kaua'i is 'the Westernmost brewpub' in the country. It serves a variety of handcrafted beers, among them Pakala Porter and the signature brew, Wai'ale'ale Ale. The menu features an impressive array of Hawaiian bar food, which is like American bar food with an Asian twist. Pupus (appetizers) include Ale-Steamed Shrimp, nachos and the ubiquitous Ahi Poke (raw Ahi in shoyu). Sandwiches, salads, pastas and filling meat entrees are also served. Wednesdays through Saturdays the pub is alive with live music.

Whalers Brew Pub - Lihue

Visitors to this relaxed restaurant can enjoy microbrews, hearty seafood plates and some of the best sunsets in the world. As if that were not enough, the proprietors also offer live entertainment almost every night. While the fare is billed as Pacific Rim, it is not the somewhat artistic, meagerly portioned cuisine you find in some Hawaiian restaurants. The dishes here are hearty and simple, while the portions are simply enormous. Accompanying them are handcrafted beers such as the Guava Wheat and Da Kine—meaning the best.

Zelos Beach House - Hanalei

It is easy to spot this place—in the evening, the sign in front is lit by tiki torches. Inside, it is warm and cheery, with a gleaming bar and exposed-beam ceiling. The lunch menu shies away from burgers and sandwiches, instead offering wraps, omelets and fish tacos. The dinner menu features fresh fish prepared in a variety of different ways. The tropical drink menu is impressive, while the selection of specialty martinis cannot be beat anywhere in the state.
