Small, easygoing Kahale's is definitely a locals' bar, given to good times and cheap drinks. It can appear a little sketchy at first glance, but patrons are pleasant, and the beachy ambience means that no one gets too bent out of shape about anything. Bands play frequently, mostly Hawaiian music, and folks often get the urge to dance, showing their appreciation with heartfelt moves. Burgers and a few appetizers are available to help soak up the beer and booze.
Grotto Bar - 3850 Alanui Dr Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa, Wailea • 808-888-6100 • 800-888-6100
Sure, it's a novelty, and sure, it's open only to hotel guests, but there's something to be said for having a cocktail while you float around a resort pool on the south shore of Maui. This cave-ensconced bar sports underwater stools, and water jets soothe and massage you while you're seated. Naturally, prices are up there, but for an indulgent repast, complete with daiquiri, margarita, or a lava flow, it's really a small fee for such island pleasure.
Jacques Bistro - 120 Hana Hwy, Paia 96779 • 808-579-8844
Terrific, affordable food and a gorgeous garden setting recommend this bistro as one of Maui's best values. The convivial atmosphere and lack of pretense make it that much more attractive. Amid all the fun, you'll discover a pleasing variety of dishes, from rack of lamb to pasta, from fresh seafood to zesty curries. Local vegetables also make an appearance, providing a simple counterpoint to the sophisticated entrees. Lamb chops, smoked duck quesadillas, and a well-dressed Greek salad crop up on the menu too, welcoming diners of all tastes and inclinations. Somewhat crowded, but a great destination.
Cheeseburger in Paradise - 811 Front St, Lahaina • 808-661-4855
Fun and animated, this seaside restaurant is constantly hopping. A terrific atmosphere and affordable prices grant it instant popularity, and the burgers are out of this world. Choose a loaded beef burger and add fries and a drink, or opt for the veggie and chicken selections. Whatever path you choose, live it up, and make sure to stick around for the live bands, which take to the stage around 4:30pm. Playing a variety of rock music, classic tunes, and current hits, they make sure the crowds are having a good time. The place isn't hard to find, but if you have any doubts, just follow your ears to the music – the building alone can't contain it.
Moose McGillycuddy's - 844 Front St, Lahaina • 808-667-7758
Front Street is the main drag in Lahaina, and this busy club is at the center of the festivities. In the evenings, you can hear music from down the street, and the place attracts crowds of locals and tourists alike. When the music's live, it's usually island-style; when spun by DJs, it's often rock and Top 40. Each afternoon, happy hour pulls in patrons, who come for cheap drinks and a break from the beach. Throughout the week, you'll find other drink specials too. But whether you come for the booze, the tunes, or to let loose on the dance floor, you're certain to have a great night and to be in good company. Breakfast is served each morning, just so you know.
Hard Rock Cafe - 900 Front St Lahaina Center, Lahaina • 808-667-7400
Chock full of Americana, not to mention surfing and rock 'n roll memorabilia, Lahaina's branch of the familiar chain stays busy day and night. Potent drinks, a tasty menu, and an oceanfront location create immediate appeal, and live music kicks up the fun more than a notch. Most times, bands play on Mondays, and they ring out loud and strong, which mightily pleases young folks (21+). Covers aren't charged unless there's a special show, in which case the price is about $5, cash only.
Casanova Italian Restaurant - 1188 Makawao Ave, Makawao • 808-572-0220
More than a restaurant, Casanova is that neighborhood institution that fills several roles at once. By day, it's a deli; in the evenings, it becomes a well-loved restaurant; and at night, it morphs into a bar and dance club. At dinner, everyone gathers for pasta, but when the food disappears, it's time for a little fun. Depending on the night, that's often live music, featuring well-known local and national bands. Contemporary Hawaiian music is always a draw, but you're just as likely to hear R&B, country, or Latino music. With such a rich cultural heritage, the stage is open to a multitude of rhythms.
