Myths, Legends and Geography - The Boy names Maui

Long ago, the Demigod Maui was born. His parents were very important for his dad held the heavens and his mother had guarded the path to the Netherworld. Maui the Demigod was the smallest in his family. Unlike his skilled brothers, Maui wasn't a good fisherman. Maui's brothers would ridicule [laugh at or make fun of] him for his bad success. Maui would take revenge over his brothers by positioning the boat so that when his brothers caught a fish, he would distract them and pull his line across theirs to steal their fish. In a while, his brothers were aware of how Maui had ended up with their fish and so, they refused to take him fishing with them anymore. Maui went to his mother who advised/sent him to see his father. There, his father gave him a magic hook called Manaiakalani and this hook fastened to the heavens. This hook could also raise the Hawaiian Islands[ creating the Hawaiian Islands] and it could even raise the old seas together. After Maui recieved the magic hook, he conviced his brothers to take him fishing with them or else, they would not catch any fish. So, they allowed him to come fishing with them. They paddled far out in their canoe and felt disappointed because they only caught sharks. His brothers criticized [to blame or to take fault of] Maui for them not being able to catch any fish. Next, Maui threw his magic hook into the ocean and he chanted a magical spell to catch the Great Fish. Boom! Crashed the rough waves." My brothers, keep on paddling and never look back! "shouted Maui. All of a sudden, the peaks of islands arose. In suspition one of his brothers looked back. Suddenly, the fishing line began to shake and the line of the magic hook snapped off. Because of his longing [suspicious] brother, the magic hook that held the heavens is lost beneath the sea forever. Maui shouted and yelled at his brothers for looking back. Now, all of Maui's great efforts to raise a large continent are forever wasted and all that he had created was a few islands to show all of his great efforts. That is how Maui and the surrounding islands have came to be [formed].

Maui and the Sun

Long ago on the island of Maui. There was a boy named Maui. His mother would stay inside and pound kapa, but the sun went too fast, so Maui's mother didn’t have enough time in day to pound kapa. The next day Maui climbed the hill were the sun slept. When the sun awoke the next day Maui lassoed him with his sister's hair. Maui beat all the suns strong legs and only his weak legs were left. Maui freed the sun and went down the hill. Now the sun moves across the sky slower and Maui's mother had more time to beat kapa.

The demi-god Maui is a household name from Tonga to the Society Islands, to the Marquesas to Hawaii. Something of a trickster, Maui had a place in his heart for mortals and is celebrated throughout the Pacific for such feats as giving fire to humans (after stealing it from its supernatural guardians) and fishing the islands of the Pacific from out of their watery depths.

Over the millennia Maui's geography has changed drastically. Formed by six different volcanoes, the islands of Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i and Kaho'olawe were once a single landmass known as Maui Nui ("Great Maui"). Rising sea levels eventually separated the islands, though they are still legally linked today - all are part of Maui County.
